Supporting Family with Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative Colitis is a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or IBD, that effects about half a million people in the United States. While it’s treatable, and can sometimes be cured by the removal of the affected part of the intestines, Ulcerative Colitis is a difficult disease to learn to live with. Because of this, the support of family and friends can have a lot to do with how well someone with Ulcerative Colitis is able to adjust to life with their disorder.
Causes of Ulcerative Colitis
Like other forms of IBD, Ulcerative Colitis can develop as a result of a number of causes. Heredity likely plays a large part in many cases, and there are also a significant number of Ulcerative Colitis cases that resulted from the use of the acne medication Accutane. Regardless of the cause, however, Ulcerative Colitis is a serious medical condition and will have a huge impact on the lifestyle of the patient.
Treatments
There are quite a few medications that can be effective in treating Ulcerative Colitis. Many patients are also advised to shift their diet away from certain foods that can be harder to digest and more likely to cause the flare up of symptoms. Some patients with Ulcerative Colitis are also candidates for a surgical procedure to remove the affected section of their intestines.
Technically the surgery for Ulcerative Colitis can be considered a cure, but it comes at a rather high price. Even if they do not suffer from full blown flare ups of their disease again, patients who are missing a part of their intestines will still be limited in what they can eat and may have to continue to take certain medications. It is certainly possible to live a productive life with Ulcerative Colitis, but that will never be possible without the support and understanding of dedicated family members and friends.
