Supporting Family with Crohn’s Disease
Receiving a diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease is an extremely difficult thing for anyone to have to deal with, and it affects not only the person who is found to have the disease. Friends and family members will also have to make changes to their lifestyles and routines in order to support the Crohn’s patient in any way they can. In order to do that, though, it is helpful for those close to the patient to understand just what a diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease means.
What is Crohn’s Disease?
Crohn’s Disease is a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). It can be caused by a number of elements, including genetics and the use of the acne medication Accutane. Patients with Crohn’s Disease suffer from a variety of symptoms including fever, abdominal pain, persistent or recurring diarrhea, and rectal bleeding.
These symptoms can become so severe that they interfere significantly with the patient carrying out normal day-to-day activities. On top of the immediate symptoms, patients with Crohn’s Disease also often suffer from persistent fatigue due to their decreased ability to eat properly and absorb needed nutrients. All of this takes a significant toll on the patient’s mental health as well, and can cause depression, anxiety, and feelings of hopelessness.
Somewhere to Turn
It is possible to adjust and live a productive life with Crohn’s Disease, but very few people will be able to do it without a great deal of support from friends and family members. The treatments for Crohn’s Disease generally involve a combination of medication and an adjusted diet that the patient will have to maintain for the rest of their life. While this is certainly preferable to living with the symptoms of the disease on a daily basis, learning to adjust eating habits and deal with taking multiple medications every day is a difficult transition to make.
