Support Groups for Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s Disease is a serious and debilitating condition. The symptoms that it causes are quite severe and debilitating and there is no comprehensive cure available at this time. For the nearly half a million people suffering from Crohn’s Disease in the United States, it can seem like living a normal life will never be possible again.
Finding Support
One very helpful step to take for people attempting to adjust to life with Crohn’s Disease is to find a support group for people with this condition. While the physical symptoms of Crohn’s Disease can be seriously debilitating, the psychological strain that this condition can cause is often equally severe. That’s why support groups are so helpful to people with Crohn’s Disease. They provide a comfortable environment to share stories and experiences and garner strength from the support of fellow sufferers.
Complementing Family and Friends
Anyone adjusting to life with Crohn’s Disease will need the love and support of family and friends. However, sometimes people who are not coping with the disease themselves cannot fully understand how hard it is to live with Crohn’s Disease. For that reason, support groups provide a valuable outlet. They allow Crohn’s sufferers to come together and support each other in a way that only someone living with the disease is able to do.
A Positive Example
Another reason that support groups for people with Crohn’s Disease can be so helpful is that they allow people who have just been diagnosed to interact with others who have been living with the disease for many years. This positive example of how life can go on after diagnosis can be extremely helpful to someone just starting to cope with having the disease.
Causes and Comfort
The people who participate in Crohn’s Disease support groups come from all backgrounds and walks of life. They may also have contracted the disease for different reasons. While some have developed Crohn’s Disease as result their genes, others in a support group may have developed the disease as a result of taking the acne drug Accutane. Accutane, also known as Isotretinoin, is a medication that is used to treat acne. Accutane has many reported side effects. It has been linked to bowel problems, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis , and Crohn’s disease. In June 2009, the manufacturer of Accutane announced that it notified the FDA of its intent to discontinue the manufacture and distribution of Accutane in the United States. No matter the cause, however, the strength and hope that support groups can provide to Crohn’s disease sufferers is beyond measure.
