Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease  is a serious type of inflammatory bowel disease. It creates chronic digestive-system inflammation and is caused by a faulty immune system and.  People living with Crohn’s disease may experience severe abdominal pain, ulcers, malnutrition, and diarrhea. The inflammation can also move into the bowels and can potentially be fatal if left untreated. Although there are no current medical cures for Crohn’s disease, certain types of therapies have shown to reduce the symptoms so people can lead normal lives.

Certain medications, such as Accutane, can influence Crohn’s disease.  Scientists have proven Crohn’s disease can be also caused by genetics. Other causes include diet, viruses, bacteria, and cigarette smoke. Age can also be a factor, as most people with Crohn’s disease are in their 20s and 30s. Caucasians are more at risk than most, but Ashkenazi Jews have been shown to have the highest risk. Other factors that may influence Crohn’s disease include hormonal changes, increase of stress, and infections.

In addition to the symptoms related to the inflamed digestive system, such as ulcers and diarrhea, people with Crohn’s disease may also suffer any of the following symptoms: arthritis, fever, liver or bile duct inflammation, fatigue, eye inflammation, and delayed child growth. People may suffer loss of appetite due to the abdominal pain and constant diarrhea, which can lead to a dramatic amount of weight-loss and a deficit of nutrients needed for good health.

People who think they might have Crohn’s disease should discuss their concern with their physician as soon as possible. Doctors may prescribe certain antacids and antibiotics to combat the diarrhea and inflammation. In severe situations, they may suggest surgery.

People can ease their symptoms of Crohn’s disease by exercising and practicing breathing exercises to reduce stress. Sufferers can also monitor their diets. They can make sure they limit their dairy intake, drink enough liquids and eat small meals daily.

Crohn’s disease sufferers need not feel as if they are alone. The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) helps sufferers by providing them information about the illness. They also provide people with access to support groups so they can connect with others experiencing the same disease.
